
Jorun Marie Kvernberg is well known both as a soloist of Norwegian traditional music and as a member of several ensembles: Majorstuen, Tindra, Unni Boksasp Ensemble, Perleskum, Trio Alde, Kviven duo, in collaboration with accordionist Kristina Farstad Bjørdal, the brass quintet NyNorsk Messingkvintett, or the vocal group Song Circus.
Jorun Marie Kvernberg (1979) studied at the State Academy of Music in Oslo, Norway, from 1999 to 2003, specialising in Norwegian Folk Music with Hardanger fiddle and fiddle as her main instruments.
Kvernberg has undertaken several commissioned works: ‘Tagal’ (57′) for ‘Kvedarkvintetten‘, ‘Friggs Rokk’ (25′) for the accordionists Geir Draugsvoll and Kristina Farstad Bjørdal, ‘Valfart’ (18′) for NyNorsk Messingkvintett, and ‘Vardøger’ (37′) for the vocal group Song Circus. She has received two Norwegian Grammys / Spellemannpris as a performer, and the highly acclaimed Edvard-prize from TONO for her composition ‘Då kom du’ back in 2005.
In June 2027, Kvernberg’s commissioned work ‘Song of Circles’ will premiere at the Tonehimmel festival in Volda (NO), performed by the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. In November 2027, another major commission for a special built folk music orchestra will be performed at Hilmarfestivalen in Steinkjer (NO).
